Harold, was born on June 2nd, 1945 in Sibley, Iowa to Alvin and Bernadette Richter. He grew up in Emery, South Dakota where he received his education, graduating from Emery High School in 1963. After high school, Harold enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California from 1963 -1966 as a Physician’s Assistant. He was honorably discharged and was in the reserves for another nine years after that. He received the National Defense Service Award and Good Conduct Award.
After departing from the Navy, Harold attended South Dakota State in Brookings, home of the Jack Rabbits. He graduated in 1971, receiving a Bachelors in Economics. Following graduation, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska and was employed by Commercial Federal Bank, where he worked his way up to V.P. During 1972 he married Karen (Holsten) Richter and they had two children; Troy & Tara Richter. In 1984, after 13 years, he parted ways with the bank and went out on his own, starting his first real estate company. He bought his initial real estate investment, two apartment buildings, in a small town in Lexington, Nebraska. He went on to create three more real estate companies and bought more investment properties, spreading all the way to Florida, where he worked with his daughter to help build his empire.
Harold enjoyed sailing, spending time with his family, being by the water, and traveling. He had a 35-foot catamaran built in South Africa that he sailed over the Atlantic Ocean, with his son Troy, over a two-month period of time. He was an adventurous soul. No mountain was too big to climb, and no quest, too crazy to attempt. He loved camping and having family reunions on the lake in Yankton, South Dakota. He built his house on St. Pete Beach, with a big backyard so that everyone could come, gather, and dance to Jimmy Buffet. He loved reading books, watching Nebraska football and watched his Jackrabbits whenever he could find them on television.
Harold is survived by his two children, Tara Richter of St. Petersburg, FL and Troy Richter of Omaha, NE; his four brothers, Earl (Georganne) Richter of Phoenix, AZ, Dale Richter of Sacramento, CA, Ralph (Twyla) Richter of Las Vegas, NV, Roger Richter of Sioux Falls SD; his sister, Mary Richter of Omaha, NE; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
